62 goals were scored across the 11 games on day 2 of the 2018 Under 21 IPT with only four of the 22 sides in action not getting on the scoresheet as the favourites put their names forwards as potential champions of the 2018 tournament.

In the six men’s matches only two were tight affairs as the Northern Blues, Southern Gauteng, Western Province and KZN Raiders all got comfortable victories to further underline their title credentials. In one of the other two games it was a narrow 3-1 win for North West over Mpumalanga thanks to goals from Pierre Bothma, Damian Tamine and Snyman Thessner while Landriu Scorgie got the only one for Mpumalanga. The real tight game was the exciting 2-2 draw between Eastern Province and Western Province Pens that required a goal from Michael Feldtman for Pens with the last play of game to snatch a draw. Andre Potgieter had given EP the lead before Malachy Barbour pegged them back. EP Regained the lead through the superb Laython Coombs before Feldtman’s intervention shared the points.

Northern Blues beat Witsies 7-0 with their PHL stars shining. Bradley Sherwood (2), Steven Paulo (2), Sam Mvimbi, Michael Forrest and Cody van Breemen were too much for the neighbours from Johannesburg. The Southern Gauteng first side were also too much for the Free State men with matching the score of the hosts in a 7-0 win. Keagan Smith got the tournament’s first hat-trick and further goals from Brandon Spence, Chris Makaba and two from Michael Newland-Nel kept Southerns undefeated after three days.

Western Province continued their fine form with a third win in three and Bulelani Ngqukuvana continued his form adding two more goals to his day 1 and 2 strikes. Nathan Loff added a third as the Cape side beat the Northern Daisies 3-0.  KZN Raiders bounced back from their day 2 defeat with an enthralling 10-3 win over Border. Border will be pleased with the second quarter which they won 1-0 through Keagan Hykes and the last quarter which they won 2-1 through Hykes and Keenan Trollip, but they were mauled in the first and third quarters conceding 4 and 5 goals without reply respectively. The Raiders goals were scored by Carlyle Volmink (4), Keegan Hezlett (2), Shane Bradbury (2), Lungani Gabela and Ryan Coleman.

In the ladies’ tournament it was business as usual for the hosts as they continued their fantastic defensive form in a 2-0 win over Eastern Province. Coach Inky Zondi is developing a reputation for defensive excellence and it showed once again as Mmamaoagi Kungoane and Ashleigh Thomas scored to see them safely home.

North West marched out to a 4-0 lead through Candice Silent, Carli Pretorius and a double from Anneke Beukman. Free State fought back with two goals from Shindre-lee Simmons and Lizanne Jacobs to set up a frenetic finish, but they could not find any more falling short.

It was five different goal scorers for Western Province as they easily overcame the SG Witsies side 5-1. Rebecca Kaps and international indoor player Jamie Southgate gave Province a 2-0 lead before Kiara Fitzhenry scored her third in three games to give Witsies hope. Unfortunately, that hope was distinguished by Nicole Koenig, Sasha Sivertson and Lenta Cullinan.

In today’s battle of the “B” sides the crowd were treated to a classic as Pens and the Daisies battled out an electrifying 2-2 draw. It was a 2-0 lead for Pens through Rozanne Compion and Estelle Stambolie, but the Daisies fought back and levelled through Ane Luus and Matika Ras. With the momentum on their side the Daisies surged forward but were unable to find the match winner.

The KZN Raiders would have been nervous of getting tested but like their mens side bounced back fantastically with a 6-0 win against Mpumalanga. Jessica Lardant, Bulelwa Mzimela, Cailynn den Bakker (2), Kiana Cormack and Tegan Fourie took the star-studded Raiders side to a comfortable victory.
