South African men slip to 15th place.

The FIH released their latest rankings on Thursday 23 July after the completion of the HWL Round 3. The South African Women managed to hold on to their 11th ranking, but Belgium have drawn to within 17 points of South Africa and with the European Championships due at the end of August, on current form, they should be able to overtake us when the Rankings get calculated again in October after the completion of the Continental Championships from each Continent. While South Africa should win the Africa Games Hockey competition in October, because that result is weighted in the Ranking system, it is only worth an equivalent 5th place in the Europeans. Belgium are currently ranked 4th in Europe. With Japan 254 points ahead of us it is unlikely we can catch them after they finished 4th in the 2014 Asian games.

FIH has released the latest FIH World Rankings as of December 2014.  These include points awarded following the completion of the Hockey World League Round One, the 2014 Champions Trophy and the Champions Challenge events.

The packed grandstand at Hartleyvale Sunday were treated to some thrilling hockey but there were mixed feeling about the results, as the Investec South Africa women’s team lost 2-0 to Chile while the SA men rallied superbly to draw 2-2 with Ireland.
