The South African Indoor Hockey Men will be competing in their fifth Indoor Hockey World Cup with a clear goal of improving on their current best finish of 10th place. Following the completion of the African Indoor Hockey Test Series against Namibia, South African Hockey have today announced the team that will head to Belgium to compete in the World Cup.

The South Africans have a wonderful blend of experience and youth. The experience of Justin Domleo (2015 & 2018 World Cups), Ryan Julius and Jethro Eustice (2018 World Cup) will be important to the squad. While the experience of the Cassiem brothers, Eustice and Julius at the Olympic Games will be a massive contributor to the team.

Much of the team is the bed rock of the team that won the African Cup of Nations at Thomas More College earlier this year and will look to continue a fine run of form that has seen the country win 12 of the 15 test matches they have played since Berlin 2018 (Drawing 3).

South Africa have been placed in pool A at the World Cup, which starts on the 2 February 2022, with Pan American Champions Argentina, defending World Champions Austria, Czech Republic, Russia and Kazakhstan. The top 4 teams in each group progress to the quarterfinals, and a guaranteed top 8 finish.

SA Indoor Hockey Captain Jethro Eustice was delighted with the opportunity to test themselves against the best in the world:

“We are incredibly excited to be heading to the World Cup and to be representing South Africa and the African continent. This is the pinnacle achievement of indoor hockey, and we are heading to Liege in order to compete and show the world the South African spirit!”
