Report on new turf in the Northern Cape
Saturday, July 23, 2011 marked a strategic time in the history of hockey in the Northern Cape.
The province played host to the opening of the first ever synthetic turf facility.
The event commenced with a junior coaching clinic, with coaches from the development committee conducting affairs. On display was the enormous talent of coaches and young players, evidence that our future is extremely bright.
The formal proceeding followed the clinic. In attendance was the Acting HOD for Education, Mr G Pharasi, Mr Teko (Sport & Recreation National), Mr Dave Carr (SA Hockey Association president), Gary Dolley (SAHA project manager) and Mr Farrel Moses (President NCSC). The executive, sub-committees, children and parents made up the rest of the gathering.
Several addresses were made to the audience:
Mr N. Snyders welcomed everyone present, an emphasized success through partnership, calling for continued collaboration between all stakeholders.
Dave Carr acknowledged the role played by former chairpersons of the NCHF in acquiring the facility, and stressed the importance of proper management in sustaining and maintaining the facility.
The SA Hockey Association president expressed confidence in the talent on show, at the same time looking forward to the province producing SA players.
Mr Farrel Moses reminded everyone of the role played by SACOS in changing the sporting landscape and acknowledged and thanked all sponsors of the project, and reiterated the need for proper management of the facility.
Mr Shane Schonegevel expressed gratitude and thanks to the benefactors; National Lottery, Northern Cape Education Department, Department Sport Arts and Culture, De Beers and the Griqualand West Cricket Board.
