It looks pretty bleak as SA crash to Egypt

THE South African boys’ hopes of earning a hockey ticket to the Olympic Youth Games in Singapore were dealt a crushing blow yesterday when they lost 2-1 to Egypt at Kat Leisure Park in East London yesterday.

The result, coupled with Ghana’s 11-0 demolition of Zimbabwe, means that victory by Ghana over Egypt today will see SA needing to score big against Kenya to qualify for Saturday’s final.

SA U17s pip Ghana in thrill-a-minute match

IN A thrill-a-minute hockey international, South Africa pipped a powerful Ghana team 3-2 in an African Olympic Junior Qualifier at Kat Leisure Park, East London, yesterday.

The final result was in the balance right until the very last minute, with Ghana on the attack, especially during the final 20 minutes.

SA teams victorious in hockey qualifiers

IT WAS a double triumph for South Africa in their African Youth Olympic Qualifier hockey encounters in East London yesterday. Both the girls and boys came away from their clashes with victories at opposite ends of the city.

SA U17 Boys thump Namibia

SOUTH Africa were in an uncompromising mood when they whipped Namibia 6-1 in their African Youth Olympic Qualifier boys’ hockey encounter at Kat Leisure Park in East London before an enthusiastic crowd yesterday.

Namibia were thrown on the backfoot from the outset and were on the retreat for much of the match, as SA’s young guns ran at them at every turn.

AFRICA YOUTH OLYMPIC QUALIFIER TOURNAMENT

The South Africana Hockey Association will host the inaugural Under 17 Africa Youth Olympic Qualifier for boys and girls in East London from 21 to 28 February 2010.

The winner of the tournament will qualify to attend the Youth Olympics that is scheduled to take place in Singapore in August 2010 subject to each Countries National Olympic Committee selection criteria.

South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Egypt will compete in the boys section.
