Eastern Province vs Northerns
by: Jonathan Cook

The opening A Section game in a calm but humid East London Thursday saw EP pick up a priceless 3-0 win over Northerns.

The half-time score in an intensely competitive but extremely entertaining game in which both sides had to win to stay in the hunt for a berth in Saturday's 4 pm final, was 0-0.

Full-force hockey gets pulses racing

Day three of the A Section men's IPT at Kat Leisure Park in East London produced some thrilling hockey.

Despite the gale-force wind blowing in from the north-east, an enthusiastic crowd saw EP and Midlands draw 5-5 in an astonishing game. The purists might point to the errors both tactical and technical as having a damper on their own enjoyment, but it was those same mistakes that contributed hugely to a wonderful spectacle.

And the moments of hockey skill weren't half bad either.

The opening game on day four of the men's interprovincial hockey tournament had the diehards on the edge of their seats in an East London subjected to a howling wind on a scale that even had locals wincing.

KZN Midlands drew 5-5 with Eastern Province Wednesday, for whom powerful left half and specialist set-piece flicker Gareth Carr netted all five in the match of the tournament so far.

Blues coach likes the flair

Northerns Blues coach Brian Grobler was pleased with the flair and pace up front in his province's 3-2 victory over the KZN Raiders.

"You want to lure the opposition out of their defensive mode so as to get your strikers behind them, but at the same time you want numbers back when you need to defend - we want to get as defensive as possible as a unit. Then you can mount counter-attacking opportunities."

Bad day for KZN hockey sides

Day two of the men's interprovincial hockey tournament was not a good one for KZN's teams, while the KZN-laden SA Country Districts side will also feel aggrieved at the outcome of their match.

In a clash they realised would be difficult to win against a Western Province side that looks the team to beat – not surprising when one considers they have 10 national players – KZN Midlands rested some key figures in going down 6-1.

Western Province coach Pierre le Roux had high praise for his players after their 6-1 win over KZN Midlands on day two of the men's IPT in East London.

"It was a superb performance, with Adam Wilson, a link who we played at centre forward, particularly outstanding, while the goal he scored was a fantastic effort," said Le Roux.

Day 1 of the Men's Interprovincial hockey tournament at the Kat Leisure Park and Buffalo Flats artificial turfs saw several players put forward their cases to the national selectors.

The WP back four were outstanding – Andrew Cronje, Eric Rose-Innes, Paul Blake and Marvin Bam – not altogether surprising when one considers their international experience with the national team, but at the same time they approached the match against EP in a thoroughly professional manner befitting their status.

While the KZN Midlands squad enjoyed a 2-1 victory over Northern Gauteng on day one of the men's interprovincial hockey tournament (IPT) at the Kat Leisure Park in East London Monday, reigning champions the KZN Raiders were beaten 5-2 by Southern Gauteng.

Midlands and Northerns were involved in a physical clash that saw the Pretoria side awarded two yellow cards while captain Darryn Gallagher's team were dished out three – to U21 players Dom Scott, Matt Coombes and Karl Oftebro.
